A Charitable Death - A work in progress

Synopsis
It is the summer of 1938. The world is on the brink of war. Caroline Abbott returns to her hometown, Ballarat, to bury her father. She discovers he has been murdered. As she unofficially investigates his death she uncovers blackmail, art fraud, his lover and his overpowering ambition.

Inspector Teagle, a Ballarat boy, is assigned to investigate Doc Abbott’s murder. He uses Caroline as much as she uses him. Both of them hiding information from each other as they peel back the veneer of Ballarat and discover the secrets lying beneath - desperate subsistence farming and the petty ambitions of a small town attempting to play on the world stage.

The inevitable steps towards WWII awaken in the characters past secrets and fears. The sins of the past come back to haunt them.
